Balenciaga just released a 2000 dollar version of the iconic IKEA 99 cent bag
Balenciaga’s creative director Demna Gvasalia is popular for thinking outside the box. He reappropriates cheap everyday pieces and turning them into luxurious items. He is also the head designer at parisian fashion colective Vetements. A collaboration with IKEA is now news.
This season, Gvasalia took a step further and created a bag that resembles an already iconic pop culture item: the 99 cent IKEA blue bag. Balenciaga’s version features real leather and has a retail price of 2000 dollars.
The internet went crazy with the similarities and begged for a response from IKEA. Well, the Swedish furniture company heard the people and gave an awesome response, poking fun at the whole situation.
A spokesperson said“We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the Ikea iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents. Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag!”and released an ad -courtesy of Swedish advertising agency ACNE – in which teaches costumers how to distinguish the real deal from the Balenciaga version.
Cristóbal Balenciaga founded French luxury fashion house Balenciaga. The House of Balenciaga now belongs to French group Kering.
